Cultural Competency

The commitment to cultural competency is a core value shared by our community of practitioners. It is important to us that all clients feel seen, heard, understood, and appreciated for who they are — and that includes being honored for your unique cultural background and the roles race, ethnicity, religion, and culture continue to play in your life.

Beyond cultural awareness, we aim to be culturally responsive, working collaboratively with clients to develop goals in alignment with their personal and cultural values. Practitioners strive to create an accepting environment in which clients can safely explore issues related to the intersectionality of their identities as well as experiences of discrimination and cultural bias.

Our practitioners understand the complexity and influence of the broader socio-political landscape. We acknowledge the profound impact of systemic inequities on mental health, particularly in the United States.

Cultural competence includes acknowledging these systemic issues and inviting clients to contextualize their own story within the larger narrative of these influences. Your struggles may not have originated with you or continue today because of your actions alone; rather, they exist within a wider framework — one that includes the impact of generational trauma and oppression, historical and institutionalized racism and misogyny, and social norms favoring certain groups (and the qualities associated with those groups) over others.

Through respect, curiosity, and deep listening, we strive to create therapeutic relationships that empower clients to speak openly about their lived experience, trust their perceptions as they navigate real world systemic challenges, create meaningful goals for their lives, and rewrite their personal narrative to include their innate resiliency.
