Highly Sensitive Persons
The trait of high sensitivity was first identified by Psychologist and Researcher Elaine Aron (https://hsperson.com/) in 1991. The scientific name for the trait is Sensory Processing Sensitivity, and it is a normal trait present in 20-30% of the population. The trait includes an awareness of subtleties others don’t notice, being sensitive to sensory input and more easily overstimulated by it, processing information, feelings, and perceptions deeply, and experiencing heightened empathy and strong feelings. Highly sensitive people are keenly aware of patterns, thorough decision-makers, and highly attuned friends and partners.
When you’re highly sensitive, you may become overwhelmed in loud environments, when under pressure, during unexpected transitions, and when exposed to reports of cruelty and images of violence. You may also be more vulnerable to experiencing anxiety and depression in response to these stressors and more.
Our practitioners who are devoted to supporting highly sensitive people of all ages to recognize the strengths and joys of this trait while also appreciating the inherent challenges. Therapy may focus on self-acceptance and self-trust, learning early cues for overwhelm, and gaining tools to navigate the intensity of the world with greater ease. In addition to working with highly sensitive teens and adults, practitioners also help parents support their highly sensitive children. Given the right support, highly sensitive children — and the adults they grow into — thrive.
