EMDR Therapy

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.” Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987, this counseling modality integrates elements of many effective therapy approaches—including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies—into structured protocols designed to maximize treatment success. It is a well-researched, evidence-based method supported as a top choice for the treatment of post-traumatic stress by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and the National Institute of Health (NIH).

During EMDR therapy, clients focus on past, present, and future experiences while simultaneously focusing on bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, sensory tappers, or alternating sounds on earphones). Through this dual focus of attention, people find it possible to process the painful memories of the past, uncover the root of current-day emotional reactions, and create lasting change.

EMDR therapy is especially powerful in addressing intrusive symptoms for people who have experienced trauma – both recent events and childhood experiences. It is also effective in addressing negative beliefs, strong emotional reactions, and anticipated worries — by targeting the unprocessed memories at the root of these experiences. As memories are processed, intrusive flashbacks, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms clear, and you experience greater ease, confidence, and well-being.
