Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy is a brief, goal-oriented approach that centers on clients’ strengths and desired future rather than on in-depth exploration of past problems. Developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, the model rests on the idea that clients already possess many of the resources needed to move forward.

Sessions focus on carefully crafted questions—such as scaling questions, exception-finding questions, and the “miracle question”—that help clients clarify what they want, notice what is already working, and identify small, concrete next steps. This approach rests on an understanding that no problem exists 100% of the time and builds on exceptions and strengths. It is an empowering approach and can be effective with individuals, couples, and families in helping them create forward movement with areas where they’ve felt stuck.
