Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)

Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS) is a parts work model developed by Dr. Richard C. Schwartz. IFS recognizes and respects the complexity of each person’s inner world, focusing on the relationships among internal parts and between parts and your core Self. Inner conflict between parts (often recognized as having competing beliefs and desires) is often at the root of anxiety, depression, distress, indecision, and dissatisfaction.

By listening deeply to all parts of self, we can have greater ease in our lives, greater compassion for ourselves, and less distress and reactivity. When we begin to understand our inner conflicts through the lens of parts, we develop an ability to see personal struggles with greater clarity and compassion.

In couples therapy, the IFS lens leads to deeper understanding about each partner’s habitual reactions and the pain held by triggered parts. As you get to know your parts and identify the patterns that arise between parts in the relationship, this ultimately leads to greater intimacy and connection.
