Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that includes a cycle of obsessions (intrusive, unwanted, stressful thoughts and urges that trigger intense anxiety) followed by compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental exercises like hand washing, checking locks, or counting) in an attempt to ease anxiety. This cycle of obsessions and compulsions often take up a lot of time, and the distress of not doing the routines can cause panic or dread. While the condition is highly distressing for the person who has it and those around them, it is treatable. Research has found Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to be a highly effective treatment. Many people also report relief through medication, mindfulness-based approaches, and EMDR Therapy. Often a combination of treatment approaches is most valuable.
