Trudy Gregson, MS, LPC

Trudy Gregson, MS, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Pennsylvania.

Trudy works with adults experiencing depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, life transitions, grief and loss. Trudy has experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and uses a variety of therapeutic approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), internal family systems therapy (IFS), solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy, customizing her approach according to each client’s needs.

Trudy believes her clients are more than their symptoms, more than the problems they face or the struggles they encounter. She recognizes that everyone needs support sometimes, and provides her clients with a safe place for hope and healing. She is always respectful of her client’s pace, and her empathic, person-centered approach empowers her clients to trust their innate wisdom as they work towards solutions that they discover through their work together.

Life Transitions

Transitions are a normal part of life. Whether you’re experiencing a midlife change, a change in your family life, contemplating a job or career change, transitioning into retirement or taking on some other new role, transitions require adjustment. These changes can bring about feelings of fear and anxiety that can be disorienting and even paralyzing.

Trudy supports people in recognizing that these feelings are normal and helps them understand them as an opportunity for growth. She collaborates with people to help them navigate and adapt to life transitions with curiosity and a shared sense of possibility, using a strength-based perspective based on each person’s innate resilience.

Through your work with Trudy, you’ll make new meanings, discover new beliefs about yourself and adopt new behaviors, providing you with the inner resources you’ll need for your next new challenge.

Grief and Loss

While most people think of grieving as a response to death, there are many kinds of losses that people grieve — the loss of a job, a relationship, the loss of one’s health or physical ability. There is no right or wrong way to grieve and there are no right or wrong emotions — feelings of anger, guilt, confusion, loneliness, and anxiety are all normal. Grief does not travel in a straight line and there is no timetable for the grief journey.

Trudy recognizes that sometimes the intensity of emotions can feel overwhelming, and in our culture, feelings of loss and grief are not always given the space and support that they deserve. Trudy helps people with the aspects of grief they’re experiencing, exploring past losses that may have resurfaced, and supports people as they develop new coping and self-care skills.

Working with Trudy, the goal is not to “get over” the loss, but to work through it, to make meaning from the loss, and adopt new ways of being in the world.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

People come to therapy to feel better. To some, this means, “make the pain or difficulties go away”. Paradoxically, the path to feeling better is to approach pain or difficulties mindfully.

Mindfulness is simply awareness in the present moment, without judgment. Using mindfulness, Trudy helps people step out of a pattern of thought and become less reactive to what is happening in the moment. By bringing attention to breathing and noticing body sensations with curiosity and open-heartedness, Trudy helps people to create the space for change.

Art Therapy and EMDR

Artwork provides a concrete, visual image that is utilized when reprocessing experiences with the bilateral stimulation of EMDR Therapy. Children, in particular, respond positively to the combination of the two.

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.” This counseling modality integrates elements of many effective therapy approaches—including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies—into structured protocols designed to maximize treatment success (see www.emdr.com for more information).

Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that aims to identify and change negative thinking patterns and encourage the development and practice of new, positive behaviors. It was developed initially to help treat people struggling with personality disorders, especially Borderline Personality Disorder.

Dr. Bridges was one of the first psychologists to use DBT with incarcerated, personality-disordered offenders in the early 1990s. When he became an assistant professor of clinical psychology at UNC-Chapel Hill, he was appointed director of the inpatient DBT unit at John Umstead Hospital.

While Dr. Bridges’ approach is more experimental than cognitive, he uses principles from DBT, particularly mindfulness to help clients learn to identify how their thoughts can contribute to or help lessen their experiences of emotional pain—and to learn various methods for slowing down their mind so that they can more fully experience the present moment.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy approach, developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, that recognizes and respects the complexity of each person’s inner world. Inner conflict between parts (often recognized as having competing beliefs and desires) is often at the root of anxiety, depression, indecisiveness, and dissatisfaction.

By listening deeply to all parts of self, we can have greater ease in our lives, greater compassion for ourselves, and less distress and reactivity. When we begin to understand our inner conflicts through the lens of IFS and parts, we develop an ability to see our struggles more clearly and with greater compassion.

In couples therapy, this lens leads to deeper understanding about habitual reactions and patterns and, ultimately, greater intimacy and connection.

Trudy uses IFS to help clients experiencing depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, issues related to trauma, life transitions, grief and loss. Clients connect with the IFS approach because it values and respects each individual’s inner system and provides for true collaboration between therapist and client.

Using IFS, Trudy guides clients through a process of bringing self-compassion and curiosity to their symptoms and difficulties, helping them to release the constraints that these difficulties place on them and bringing balance and harmony to their lives. Accelerated Experiential-Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

Accelerated experiential-dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on healing-oriented techniques and aims to achieve a transformation in client behavior by exploring the in-depth processing of difficult emotional and relational experiences.

This innovative method was developed by Dr. Diana Fosha and has roots in and resonances with many disciplines, amongst them attachment theory, affective neuroscience, and body-focused approaches.

Heather Hill, MSS, LCSW

She earned a Bachelors Degree in Economics from Bucknell University and a Masters in Social Work from Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research.

She has been working with children, adolescents and adults for over 10 years helping them to address a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, parenting and life transitions. She incorporates mindfulness, cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and family systems theories in her approach to clinical work. She is trauma informed, humanistic and holistic in orientation.

Adolescents

Adolescence is a time of great change and many teenagers feel vulnerable and confused. The developmental task of identity formation prompts them to ask themselves the big questions: Who am I? What do I want to be? How do I manage my overwhelming emotions? Heather provides an environment of warmth, acceptance, and safety for teenagers to explore these questions. Heather has extensive experience with a diverse population of teenagers, including LGBTQ and teenagers on the autistic spectrum.

Anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression are negative mood states that rob a person’s sense of vitality, mission and engagement in life. Using cognitive and mindfulness approaches, Heather works with clients to reveal patterns of thinking and behaving that contribute to anxiety and depression. She is particularly interested in helping clients overcome social isolation and to feel connected to a broader community and sense of meaning.

Parenting

The pressures of parenting in our modern world can be overwhelming to even the most equipped parent. Heather is interested in helping parents manage the work/life balance and social media influences that challenge traditional parenting wisdom. Heather wants to especially support parents who have children with ADHD and parents of multiples.

Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy is an emerging field that has shown to be helpful in relieving symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress and ADHD. Heather completed a certificate in Ecotherapy from the Earthbody Institute and is working on incorporating Ecotherapy techniques into her practice. Ecotherapy envelops a wide variety of activities that help clients to awaken and/or deepen a connection to nature for the purposes of healing and growth. Heather is as likely to work outdoors as well as indoors with clients around these practices.
