Art Therapy and EMDR

Artwork provides a concrete, visual image that is utilized when reprocessing experiences with the bilateral stimulation of EMDR Therapy. Children, in particular, respond positively to the combination of the two.

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.” This counseling modality integrates elements of many effective therapy approaches—including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies—into structured protocols designed to maximize treatment success (see www.emdr.com for more information).

Specialties

Art Therapy

Through painting, drawing, sculpture and other modes of creative process, art making is highly effective in helping to recognize and express underlying emotions and patterns of thought, offering a non-verbal outlet for uncovering underlying issues.

It is the process of art making, rather than the product, that is the focus of the treatment, and is, at times, healing in and of itself.

Art Therapy does not require artistic ability, and is appropriate for all ages.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR taps into the natural healing ability of the body, through bilateral stimulation of the brain. This can be done in various ways, including through rapid eye movement, tapping or other physical movements.

EMDR has been found to be effective in treating:

  • Anxiety & panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Grief
  • Pain and addictions
  • Self-esteem and performance anxiety
  • PTSD

EMDR has been established by extensive research, and has successfully helped treat millions of individuals. The World Health Organization recognizes EMDR Therapy as having the most successful outcomes in treating trauma.

Performance Enhancement with EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a potent intervention for healing those experiences of the past that create obstacles in the present day. EMDR is a powerful tool for performance enhancement, because it removes blocks to achievement and builds mental strengths and resources. Self-defeating behaviors, attitudes and beliefs can be modified and replaced with high-functioning behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs for positive, permanent change.

EMDR

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.” This counseling modality integrates elements of many effective therapy approaches—including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies—into structured protocols designed to maximize treatment success (see www.emdr.com for more information).

During EMDR, clients focus on past, present, and future experiences while simultaneously focusing on external, bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, sensory tappers, alternating sounds on earphones). Through this dual focus of attention and the entire protocol, people are able to process through upsetting memories and experiences that remain “stuck” and continue to create current-day emotional reactions despite previous counseling work.

EMDR is especially powerful in helping people alleviate symptoms of anxiety and in helping people who have experienced trauma (childhood abuse, witnessing violence and death, car accident, bullying, etc.). EMDR can also be very effective in enhancing feelings of confidence and unblocking motivation to make positive changes in one’s life.

Play Therapy and EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation techniques to help “unlock stuck material,” allowing the mind and body to process the traumatic event. Play Therapy techniques combined with EMDR can be effective in working with children with trauma, anxiety and phobias.
