Somatic Therapy

Somatic Therapy is a method of integrating emotions, intuition, and bodywork. It is an alternative healing approach that uses gentle touch and talk together to help people listen to their bodies, and deal with the stresses in their lives. The foundation of the work is grounded in gentleness, respect, openness, understanding, noticing, and discovery.

I have always been fascinated by the bodymind connection and the power touch can have in healing.  I love that the intention of this practice is to listen to the body instead of trying to “fix” it.

I am especially passionate about working with highly sensitive/intuitive women to help them to find their authentic voice and feel empowered by their ability to feel deeply.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy is an evidence-based practice of talk therapy for people seeking immediate change. Sometimes we may not be afforded the time and the knowledge to know why a problem occurred; however, there is current pressure and demand to solve it. When our problems loom large in our lives, we can sometimes lose sight of the strengths that have helped us to persevere in the past.

This approach recognizes that no problem exists 100% of the time and builds on positive exceptions and strengths that naturally occur in client’s lives.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is increasingly the recognized method of working with children and adolescents. Play is natural for children who are able to more readily engage in this type of therapy than traditional talk therapy, because play is the language children use to communicate. A trained play therapist understands the metaphors used in the child’s play to gain understanding of the problem areas and recognize the stages of healing. Play therapy provides safe and supportive environment so the child can work through problems, express themselves and heal without feeling overwhelmed or being re-traumatized.

Additionally, play therapy addresses the sensory component of trauma that cannot be achieved through traditional psychotherapy. The combination of family therapy “talk time” and play therapy integrates the cognitive memories of trauma/loss with the part of the brain that holds the deeper emotional experience: the body itself.

Play Therapy is effective for resolving behavior problems at home and school, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, loss and adjustment to family stressors and life transitions. The child is able to learn adaptive skills, gain self-control and mastery, increase self esteem and heal from trauma and loss.

I truly believe the most effective way to connect with a child is to enter their world of creativity and imagination. Play therapy provides a safe space for children to express their innate creativity and allows the therapist to enter that world with them. In that space of play, new perspectives and solutions are found and healing is possible.

Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that aims to identify and change negative thinking patterns and encourage the development and practice of new, positive behaviors. It was developed initially to help treat people struggling with personality disorders, especially Borderline Personality Disorder.

Practitioners

Therese Daniels, MA, LPC

Therese M. Daniels, MA, LPC

Therese started using Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help clients who were diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) several years ago in her private practice. DBT can be effective in treating symptoms of BPD such as Anxiety, Depression, Irritability, and self-destructive/self-harmful behaviors. Therese uses DBT to help clients who are experiencing these symptoms as a part of BPD or as independent Mental Health conditions, to help learn more healthy ways to cope with stress and to regulate their emotions more effectively.

Mindfulness is also a technique used in DBT and this helps clients focus more on the here and now and to not impose self-judgement thoughts on themselves.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy approach, developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, that recognizes and respects the complexity of each person’s inner world. Inner conflict between parts (often recognized as having competing beliefs and desires) is often at the root of anxiety, depression, indecisiveness, and dissatisfaction.

By listening deeply to all parts of self, we can have greater ease in our lives, greater compassion for ourselves, and less distress and reactivity. When we begin to understand our inner conflicts through the lens of IFS and parts, we develop an ability to see our struggles more clearly and with greater compassion.

In couples therapy, this lens leads to deeper understanding about habitual reactions and patterns and, ultimately, greater intimacy and connection.

Nature-Assisted Therapy and Leadership

bridge-thumbNature-assisted therapy can help a person deepen their connection with nature while understanding and processing the emotional impact of a declining and damaged environment.

Using metaphors and associations from aspects of nature, the client gains access to a deeper wisdom or understanding of themselves and in the process feels a revitalized connection to place. Ecotherapy has shown to be effective in alleviating symptoms of depression, anxiety, and ADHD.

EMDR

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.” This counseling modality integrates elements of many effective therapy approaches—including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies—into structured protocols designed to maximize treatment success (see www.emdr.com for more information).

During EMDR, clients focus on past, present, and future experiences while simultaneously focusing on external, bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, sensory tappers, alternating sounds on earphones). Through this dual focus of attention and the entire protocol, people are able to process through upsetting memories and experiences that remain “stuck” and continue to create current-day emotional reactions despite previous counseling work.

EMDR is especially powerful in helping people alleviate symptoms of anxiety and in helping people who have experienced trauma (childhood abuse, witnessing violence and death, car accident, bullying, etc.). EMDR can also be very effective in enhancing feelings of confidence and unblocking motivation to make positive changes in one’s life.
